Zinger Offensive Player of the Day: Aug. 5

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Corey Simpson, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher and first baseman from Sweeny, Texas, had a strong opening game for the Texas Rangers in the team’s 5-4 win against the Reds on Sunday night at the Area Code Games.

Simpson, who started the game playing first base, recorded a sac fly in the first, a run-scoring double in the third and a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, a moon shot over the 400-foot sign in center field.

He also turned an impressive double play in the opening inning by spearing a hard grounder down the first base line, stepping on the bag and firing to second to double up the Reds runner.

Simpson, a first team All-County selection this spring and a University of Houston commit, hit .505 as a junior with nine home runs and 42 RBI.
