Area Code alumns get big signing bonuses

August 15 was the deadline for those players selected in the 2011 MLB Draft in June to sign with the team that drafted them. Here is a quick look at those Area Code alumns, who were selected in 2011 and their signing bonus. These players listed below played in the Area Code Games (Jake Hager did not due to injury) and were all selected in the first round.

  • No. 1 overall: Gerrit Cole - RHP - UCLA: Gerrit Cole played for the Milwaukee Brewers (Blue) in the 2007 Area Code Baseball Games. He was drafted in the first round out of high school in 2008, but declined the Yankees offer and headed to UCLA. Signed: 8,000,000 | Pittsburgh Pirates

  • No. 4 overall: Dylan Bundy - RHP - Owasso (Owasso, Okla.): Bundy played in the 2008 Area Code Games on the Chicago White Sox team, along with Archie Bradley. Back in 2008 the pair led off the Area Code Games by tossing a no-hitter. In 2011 Bundy was named Gatorade Player of the Year. Signed: 4,000,000 | Baltimore Orioles

  • No. 5 overall: Derek "Bubba" Starling - RHP - Gardner-Edgerton (Gardner, Kan.): Starling pitched for the White Sox in 2010 and showed well on the mound and on the field. He hit the ball extremely well last summer in Long Beach and the hardest part for Kansas City was his committment to Nebraska. He signed with the Corn Huskers to play both football and baseball.   • No. 6 overall: Anthony Rendon - 3B -Rice: Rendon played in the 2007 Area Code Games on the Texas Rangers Area Code Team. He entered the 2011 season as one of the best players in the nation, but some injuries hurt the Owl and he fell to No. 6. Signed: 6,000,000 | Washington Nationals

  • No. 7 overall: Archie Bradley - RHP - Broken Arrow (Broken Arrow, Okla.): Bradley played with Bundy in the 2008 Area Code Games and combined for a no-hitter. If memory serves correct the pair compiled 16 strikeouts in that performance. There was talk in the state title game Bradley hit 100mph on the gun. He was also a highly touted quarterback and attended the 2010 Elite 11. Signed: 5,000,000 | Arizona Diamondbacks

  • No. 12 overall: Taylor Jungmann - RHP - Texas: Jungmann played for the Texas Rangers back in the 2007 Area Code Games. He was part of a team that included Anthony Rendon. He was out of Rogers (Temple, Texas) High School. Signed: 2,525,000 | Milwaukee Brewers

  • No. 16 overall: Chris Reed - LHP - Stanford: Reed played for the Milwaukee Brewers (Gray) team in 2007. He ptiched for L.A. City Section school Cleveland (Reseda, Calif.). Signed: 1,589,000 | Los Angeles Dodgers

  • No. 17 overall: CJ Cron - 1B -Utah: Cron played in the 2007 Area Code Games on the Chicago White Sox team. Back in the 2007 game program he was listed as a catcher. But when the Angels came calling they listed him as a first baseman on the board. Signed: 1,467,000 | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

  • No. 25 overall: Joseph Ross - RHP - Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.): Ross played in 2010 for the Milwaukee Brewers (White) team. He was a teammate of Robert Stephenson, who went a couple of spots after Ross in the draft. Trevor Gretzky also played on that team, and he recently signed with the Cubs.   • No. 26 overall: Blake Swihart - C - Rio Rancho (Rio Rancho, N.M.): Swihart played in 2010 for the Cincinnati Reds Area Code Team. He was one of the best players in the 2010 games and shined in California. He was the Gatorade State Player of the Year in New Mexico and posted a .545 average, five homers and 41 RBI.   • No. 27 overall: Robert Stephenson - LHP - Alhambra (Martinez, Calif.): Stephenson was the 2011 Gatorade State Player of the Year for California. He finished as a finalist for CalHiSports.com State Player of the Year, which went to Henry Owens of Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Stephenson started the 2011 season off with a pair of no-hitters and completed an outstanding season, one that saw him enter the CalHiSports.com State Record Book for strikeouts (142).   • No. 32 overall: Jake Hager * - SS - Sierra Vista (Las Vegas, Nev.): Hager was injured for the 2010 Area Code Games and had he played it would have been with the Cincinnati Reds. He had a solid 2011 season as he .533 with 11 homers. He was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in Nevada. Signed: 963,000 | Tampa Bay Rays
