Weekend Watch: Five must-see matches

Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five Friday or Saturday matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications.

This week, a showdown of undefeated teams in New York highlight the schedule.

Friday, Oct. 14

No. 16 Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) vs. Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.): In this first-round meeting at the Jefferson City Soccer Classic, Rockhurst and Chaminade square off in a battle of perennial Missouri state powers. Although Chaminade is not a POWERADE FAB 50 team this year, it remains very dangerous – just ask Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.), which was held to a 1-1 draw by Chaminade.

Saturday, Oct. 15

No. 1 St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark, N.J.) vs. St. Augustine (Richland, N.J.): This matchup features the defending Prep A champ vs. the defending Non-Public A state champ. St. Augustine capped a memorable 2010 season with a 2-0 state final win over Pingry to earn a POWERADE FAB 50 Top 20 ranking. This would have been a better match last year as St. Augustine has dipped to 7-5-1 following last year’s 25-1 showing. However, it remains one of those rare regular-season meetings between defending state champions.

No. 10 Martin Luther King (Manhattan, N.Y.) vs. White Plains (White Plains, N.Y.): MLK is coming off a victory over a Catholic High School League opponent last weekend and next faces a more traditional public school program that is part of the Class AA state title talk this week. These matches are important in sizing up the top teams from the three main high school associations in New York since they all compete for different titles.

No. 11 Conestoga (Berwyn, Pa.) vs. Unionville (Unionville, Pa.): Unionville was a POWERADE FAB 50 member in recent years and although the team has not been ranked this season, it could turn heads with a victory over Conestoga. Unionville enters the match at 11-2 while Conestoga is 13-0. Interesting side note, Unionville won four matches, then lost, won four matches, then lost and is now carrying a three-match win streak into the Conestoga meeting.

No. 17 Baldwinsville (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) vs. Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius, N.Y.): If there was a Match of the Week, this would be it. Baldwinsville brings a 13-0 record into its meeting with Fayetteville-Manlius, which is 12-0-1. F-M is in the ESPNHS New York state Top 10, but a big result here will validate a move into the POWERADE FAB 50. Baldwinsville features Syracuse-bound keeper Alex Bono and the high-scoring duo of Ben Ramin and Michael Guardino, who have combined for 23 goals. F-M counters with an offense led by Tyler Forbes, who has 16 goals.
