Cal-Hi Sports Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Check here to see which teams may be going up, which ones going down in next week’s state rankings, the 11th of the 2011 regular season.

The game of the night on Friday was at Cerritos College where No. 2 Servite survived an overtime thriller against No. 20 Santa Margarita with a 43-42 triumph. We have linked the ESPNLA story from that game on our front page and will have more about the Friars later in the weekend. The only upset of the night was in the CIF Central Section where Clovis West ended a terrible season on a bright note by knocking off previously unbeaten Clovis.

The game of the night on Thursday was at Moorpark College where No. 3 Westlake rolled over No. 11 St. Bonaventure 35-14. It was similar to the Warriors’ previous 43-16 victory against No. 10 Oaks Christian. Contrary to what some were saying on the Fox Sports West broadcast, however, Westlake has had a close game this year and in fact came within one play of losing when the team played Del Oro of Loomis.

Numbers were important on many fronts in Westlake’s win. Coach Jim Benkert became the third coach in the state this season to record his milestone 200th victory and joins a list that in the history of the state still only includes less than 70 names. Kicker Alex Ball did not get to try or make any field goals so he ended his regular season two short of the state record of 18 set in 1993 by Justin Ventura of Claremont and tied in 2004 by Kai Forbath from Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

The number that perhaps means the most for Benkert and his squad is 10 as in 10-0. The win capped Westlake’s fourth 10-0 regular-season since 1999, completed a sweep through the Marmonte League (something the Warriors didn’t do last year) and ensured a top seeding in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs. Two of the three previous 10-0 teams heading into the playoffs also went on to finish the section playoffs at 14-0. If this year’s team does the same, there doesn’t seem to be much doubt that a 15th game would be next in a CIF state bowl game.
