State Divisional Girls BB Rankings

Important announcement from Cal-Hi Sports | Archived Cal-Hi Sports content

There are only four new teams this week in the five CIF divisions combined. Still No. 1 are Mater Dei of Santa Ana (D1), St. Mary’s of Stockton (D2), Bishop O’Dowd (D3), Windward (D4) and Mission Prep (D5).

Beginning this week, state-ranked teams by Cal-Hi Sports can theoretically lose in a section playoff game and see their seasons come to a quick and stunning end.

Most of the state still has one week to go in the regular season, but the massive CIF Southern Section will begin to pare down teams this week.

Here is the third listing of girls teams this season with analysis and bubble teams for each division (records listed after games of Feb. 11 with some teams that have results included for this week; previous ranking in parentheses):

CIF Division I

1. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 23-3

2. (2) Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 24-2

3. (3) Santiago (Corona) 27-0

4. (4) Summit (Fontana) 21-3

5. (5) Berkeley 19-2

6. (6) Edison (Huntington Beach) 21-3

7. (7) Brea Olinda (Brea) 20-5

8. (8) Etiwanda 21-3

9. (9) Huntington Beach 21-4

10. (10) Narbonne (Harbor City) 23-6

11. (11) El Toro (Lake Forest) 23-2

12. (12) Troy (Fullerton) 17-7

13. (14) Rialto 23-1

14. (NR) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 19-7

15. (13) San Diego 21-5

Drops: Previous No. 15 Lincoln (Stockton).

Bubble: Centennial (Corona) 21-6; Deer Valley (Antioch) 17-7, Eastlake (Chula Vista) 23-3, Hanford 19-4, Heritage (Brentwood) 19-4, M.L. King (Riverside) 16-10, Stockdale (Bakersfield) 22-3, Wilcox (Santa Clara) 18-2.

Comments: The very top teams in this division probably won’t get tested until the later rounds of the section playoffs, even the top four who are in the Southern Section. That section, along with the L.A. City, is done for the regular season. Pleasant Grove is this week’s only newcomer. We already know that the Eagles have a win this week over previous No. 15 Lincoln of Stockton, but the Trojans were going to drop anyway due to a different loss last week to St. Francis of Sacramento. Pleasant Grove also has a head-to-head win over San Diego.

CIF Division II

1. (1) St. Mary’s (Stockton) 21-3

2. (2) Lynwood 20-4

3. (3) Carondelet (Concord) 21-3

4. (4) St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 21-3

5. (5) J.W. North (Riverside) 23-4

6. (6) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 19-5

7. (7) River City (West Sacramento) 24-1

8. (8) Mark Keppel (Alhambra) 24-3

9. (10) Casa Grande (Petaluma) 26-1

10. (9) Dougherty Valley (San Ramon) 16-8

Drops: None.

Bubble: Canyon (Anaheim) 19-7, Foothill (Tustin) 20-5, La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 20-4, Mt. Carmel (San Diego) 22-5, Palo Alto 15-4, Perris 21-6, Presentation (San Jose) 15-9, Ventura 22-3.

Comments: The win by St. Mary’s over D3 No. 1 Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland shows how tough it will be for any team in this division to deny the Rams of a fourth straight state title. That also would be their second in a row in D2. The only top 10 team to lose last week was Dougherty Valley, but since the loss was by just 64-62 to unbeaten D3 ranked Miramonte the only move was to drop the Wildcats one position.

CIF Division III

1. (1) Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) 21-3

2. (2) Mission Bay (San Diego) 18-6

3. (3) Alemany (Mission Hills) 26-2

4. (4) Miramonte (Orinda) 24-0

5. (5) Sacramento 19-6

6. (6) Yorba Linda 22-5

7. (9) Terra Nova (Pacifica) 18-5

8. (7) Modesto Christian 20-5

9. (10) West (Torrance) 22-5

10. (NR) Bonita (La Verne) 24-3

Drops: Previous No. 8 Santa Cruz.

Bubble: Arroyo Grande 20-5, Independence (Bakersfield) 21-4, Laguna Hills 18-8, Mt. Miguel (Spring Valley) 20-5, Ridgeview (Bakersfield) 19-6, Vanden (Travis AFB) 19-7.

Comments: Like the other divisions this week, there wasn’t much movement as the regular season is winding down. Bishop O’Dowd certainly wasn’t going to drop at all after losing on the road to D2 No. 1 St. Mary’s of Stockton in a game that saw the Dragons come back in the second half. Modesto Christian also lost to St. Mary’s (it wasn’t close), but only dropped behind Terra Nova of Pacifica. Santa Cruz lost a game to D4 bubble team Soquel and still looks like a strong team. Bonita just has a few more quality wins. We also chose the Bearcats over Arroyo Grande in a close call even though Arroyo Grande is a No. 2 seed compared to Bonita at No. 3 in the CIFSS Div. IIIAAA playoffs.

CIF Division IV

1. (1) Windward (Los Angeles) 23-3

2. (2) La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 23-1

3. (4) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 21-4

4. (5) St. Mary’s (Berkeley) 20-6*

5. (3) Chaminade (West Hills) 22-4

6. (6) Serra (Gardena) 21-3

7. (7) Salesian (Richmond) 21-3

8. (8) St. Bernard (Playa del Rey) 22-7

9. (10) Mercy (San Francisco) 23-3

10. (NR) Bellarmine-Jefferson (Burbank) 20-7

Drops: Previous No. 9 Bishop’s (La Jolla).

Bubble: Bishop’s (La Jolla) 17-7; Calaveras (San Andreas) 23-3; Campbell Hall (North Hollywood) 16-6, JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 20-6, Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) 18-5, Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 17-9, St. Patrick/St. Vincent (Vallejo) 20-5, Soquel 21-3.

Comments: In addition to this division having the current No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the overall state rankings, it’s also a very deep group of strong squads. Several on the bubble, such as Mater Dei Catholic, St. Patrick/St. Vincent and Soquel, probably would be ranked in the top 10 in Division III. Bishop’s was the only team to fall out from last week after taking a loss to D2 bubble team La Costa Canyon.

CIF Division V

1. (1) Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo) 24-1

2. (2) Brookside Christian (Stockton) 21-4

3. (3) Pinewood (Los Altos Hills) 14-10

4. (4) St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda) 16-9

5. (5) St. Vincent (Petaluma) 23-4

6. (7) Hamilton (Hamilton City) 23-0

7. (9) Eastside Prep (Palo Alto) 12-12

8. (NR) Ripon Christian 19-4

9. (8) St. Francis CCC (Watsonville) 15-7

10. (10) Rolling Hills Prep (San Pedro) 13-4

Drops: Previous No. 6 Turlock Christian.

Bubble: Central Valley Christian (Visalia) 15-7, Convent Sacred Heart (San Francisco) 15-7, International (San Francisco) 16-9, Ocean View Christian (San Diego) 18-2, Pacific Collegiate (Santa Cruz) 19-4, Portola 20-4, Providence (Burbank) 22-4, Ripon Christian 19-4, Villanova Prep (Ojai) 20-6.

Comments: No. 2 Brookside Christian lost a one-point game to Sheldon of Sacramento last week, but has done more than enough for a loss like that to a D1 school to avoid any kind of a drop, especially compared to the teams behind the Knights. St. Joseph Notre Dame actually lost twice and didn’t drop with those losses to D4 powers St. Patrick/St. Vincent and St. Mary’s of Berkeley. The only team that did fall out from this week’s rankings, Turlock Christian, had to be replaced by Ripon Christian, which is the team that beat the Eagles.
