Football playoffs: Round 1 recap

While the first round of the state football playoffs produced some upsets, most of the top teams were able to re-establish their status as the favorites.

In Class LL, top-seeded Xavier rolled past Glastonbury, 34-6, while second-seeded Staples beat Ridgefield, 48-21.

The top teams in Class L were also able to advance, as Windsor beat Notre Dame-West Haven, 14-7, to improve to 11-0 on the season. And Masuk, the No. 1 team in the state, earned its way into the semifinals with a 28-14 win over North Haven.

One of the biggest upsets of the day took place in Class L, as New London fell to New Canaan, 27-26. New Canaan (10-1) will face Windsor on Saturday.

Class M remains Ansonia's to lose, and the Chargers looked good while running over Bethel, 35-6.

The most unlikely result occurred in Class S, as top-seeded Capital Prep fell to Cromwell, 23-14. Cromwell's Brett Director scored a pair of touchdowns in the victory, catching a 7-yard scoring pass and also returning an interception 50 yards for a TD to give Cromwell a 21-8 lead in the third quarter.
