Week 8 football is here

Lots of good football around the state this weekend, some of which has already concluded.

Dr. Phillips, which had climbed to No. 8 in the POWERADE Florida Weekly Rankings, was upset by Edgewater on Thursday night, 38-19. Alton Howard was instrumental for the Eagles (4-2), accounting for two TDs. He was also named Homecoming King at halftime. Edgewater has now won its last four games after dropping an out-of-state game to Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) and a close content to talented Olympia to start the season. The Eagles will be a team to watch moving forward.

The state's top-ranked team, Armwood, seems unlikely to be challenged by Strawberry Crest — but stranger things have happened. No. 2 Miramar takes on Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes) in a battle of unbeatens. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), fresh off a loss to to Miramar last week, takes on South Broward. Bradenton Manatee (No. 5) battles Cypress Bay (Weston) in a meeting of what is likely the state's two best two-loss teams.

No. 6 Plant (Tampa) takes on Brandon, No. 9 Lincoln (Tallahassee) battles cross-town rival Leon and Glades Central (No. 10) faces Dillard. And that's the just top 10. Be sure to check out ESPNHS.com/FL every Monday for updated results and rankings.

Finally, in a game without rankings implications but plenty of human interest, Hillel Community Day will take on David Posnack at FIU's North Stadium on Monday. The so-called Kiddish Cup, now in its third year, pits the two rival South Florida Jewish schools.
