When POWERADE FAB 50 No. 33 Union (Tulsa, Okla.) plays host to Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.) this Friday, it looks like a David vs. Goliath matchup on paper.
The Redskins have captured seven Oklahoma Class 6A state titles and are the three-time defending state champs. The school’s enrollment lists 2,554 students and has 1,235 students in the senior class alone. On the other hand, Evangel Christian is a small, private school that enrolls only 388. However, the Louisiana school is able to boast twelve state titles and the 1999 POWERADE FAB 50 national championship, something Union is still chasing.
Last year, Union topped Evangel, 44-32, in Shreveport. Evangel had not lost a home game since 2007. The game will be televised at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Keep an eye on: Evangel Christian ATH Brandon Stewart, an ESPNU 2-star prospect with offers from Southern Miss and Tulane and OL Josh Thomas (2013) who is reporting a Texas offer. Union RB Kendal Holmes (2013) rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s game.
Winning: Union has won thirteen consecutive district championships and twenty-four overall. The school’s all-time record is 429-236-10 (.634 winning percentage). Evangel is 217-38 (.850 winning percentage) and their state crowns have come in Class 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A.
Union fun facts: Since January of 2003, Union has paid $1,000 per year to the University of Miami for the right to continue to use a “split U” logo that is similar to the college’s.
Evangel Christian fun facts: The Eagles have three players currently on NFL rosters. Former alumni include Detroit Lions DE Keyunta Dawson, Cincinnati Bengals DB Jonathan Wade, and San Diego Chargers RB Jacob Hester.
