Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five weekend matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications.
This week, the Florida state finals and a collection POWERADE FAB 50 match-ups in California and Texas highlight the schedule.
Friday, Feb. 10
No. 1 Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) vs. No. 11 Coppell (Texas): This match might have had a little more flair had it not been for the fact Coppell sustained a mid-week loss. Thus, Carroll is going to need a victory to remain No. 1 in this battle of district powers.
No. 2 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) vs. No. 12 Plano West (Plano, Texas): Plano West has bounced back from an earlier season loss to defeat POWERADE FAB 50 programs Ursuline Academy (Dallas) and Plano East (Plano, Texas). The next challenge is Marcus in this loaded district. This will be the first of two meetings between the programs.
Saturday, Feb. 11
No. 3 George Jenkins (Lakeland, Fla.) vs. No. 29 Ida Baker (Cape Coral, Fla.): George Jenkins is one win away from completing a perfect season. This Class 4A state final meeting should prove highly competitive considering both teams have the common opponent of American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), with George Jenkins winning 2-1 on a late goal and Baker losing 2-1.
No. 9 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.) vs. No. 50 Flintridge-Sacred Heart (La Canada, Calif.): These league rivals close out the regular season in positions opposite of where they started. Flintridge-Sacred heart was the preseason No. 1 team, but injuries took a toll on this program and the Tologs are barely clinging to a national ranking. Harvard-Westlake, however, started the year ranked No. 20 and has climbed to No. 9. A top five finish is very possible with a strong postseason showing.
No. 14 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) vs. No. 43 Hagerty (Oviedo, Fla.): St. Thomas Aquinas aims to close out a second straight undefeated season against Florida schools when it faces Hagerty for the Class 5A state final. Hagerty, which opened in 2005, is in search of its first state title.
