Alexis Shaffer, a Class of 2013 midfielder from Cary, N.C., has verbally committed to Virginia, her family has confirmed to ESPNHS.

Shaffer plays for CASL Chelsea, the defending ECNL National Champions at the U17 age group. She has been twice named to Region III ODP teams and recently was invited to the U18 National Camp in California.

She also plays high school soccer for Green Hope (Cary, N.C.), where she was named offensive MVP and earned a spot on the all-conference team.

Shaffer is the second confirmed commit to Virginia. She joins goalkeeper Morgan Stearns.

Why Virginia?: "The University of Virginia is truly a special place that I am so excited to be part of Coach [Steve] Swanson's top-ranked program. The first time I stepped on this beautiful campus, everything seemed to be exactly what I was looking for in a school and soccer program. Virginia has the best coaching staff that is committed to competing for the ACC and national championships every year and players that really made me feel a part of the program. All of this made UVA a perfect fit for me."

What surprised you the most about the recruiting process?: "The most surprising part of the recruiting process is how early it starts as there are a lot of really nice coaches running great programs that makes the ACC & SEC so competitive. It is very rewarding when you find the perfect fit."
