Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five Friday or Saturday matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications.
This week, the first state champion of 2011 will be crowned and a pair of matchups in Ohio highlight the schedule.
Friday, Oct. 7
No. 6 Council Rock North (Newtown, Pa.) vs. Neshaminy (Langhorne, Pa.): Council Rock North puts its undefeated record on the line against a Neshaminy team was was riding a six-match win streak until a midweek loss. At 7-3, Neshaminy could be Council Rock North's most daunting remaining regular-season opponent and the programs will play twice in the next 11 days.
Saturday, Oct. 8
No. 3 Carmel (Carmel, Ind.) vs. Guerin Catholic (Indianapolis, Ind.): Carmel is the favorite in Indiana, but that hasn't worked out for the Greyhounds in recent years. Although Carmel will be favored, Guerin Catholic is a program capable of pulling off the upset. Guerin has a win over Kentucky's No. 1-ranked team and tied POWERADE FAB 50 Top 10 Evansville Memorial (Evansville, Ind.). This match is a section final, meaning the winner keeps its state title hopes alive.
No. 4 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) vs. St. Francis de Sales (Columbus, Ohio): This might be Walsh Jesuit's final major test of the season. St. Francis de Sales is riding an eight-match undefeated streak and the 8-2-2 program only has losses to POWERADE FAB 50-ranked Doublin Coffman (Dublin, Ohio) and Beavercreek (Beavercreek, Ohio). Once the regular season is finished, Walsh Jesuit will be a heavy favorite in Ohio's Division II playoffs while most of the state powers will duke it out in Division I.
No. 12 Strongsville (Strongsville, Ohio) vs. Medina (Medina, Ohio): Back at full strength, Strongsville is showing signs of being the Ohio Division I favorite. The match between Strongsville and Medina pits a perennial power in Strongsville against a recent state champ in Medina.
South Dakota state tournament: The three-day event started Thursday with the state quarterfinals, continues today with the semifinals and concludes Saturday with the Class AA and A title matches. RC Stevens and Aberdeen, the top two seeds, each advanced Thursday and could meet for the Class AA final.
