Weekend Watch: Five must-see matches

Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five Friday or Saturday matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications.

This week, the Indiana state finals feature three teams vying to close out undefeated seasons with state titles.

Friday, Oct. 28

Eastview (Apple Valley, Minn.) vs. Centennial (Circles Pines, Minn.): The last of the four Class AA state quarterfinal matches offers the most intriguing match-up. Eastview is 13-2-4 and Centennial sports a 16-1-2 record. The teams had three regular-season common opponents and the margin of victory was nearly the same in each contest. Eastview spent time as No. 1 in the state this season. Centennial may be without national recruit Jenna Roering, who has 32 goals this season, as she trains with the U.S. Under-18 National Team this week in California.

Saturday, Oct. 29

No. 2 Carmel (Carmel, Ind.) vs. No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.): The showcase match of the weekend pits two teams that are very much alive for the POWERADE FAB 50 national title. Both teams enter this Indiana Class 2A state final with undefeated records: Carmel at 21-0-1 and Hamilton Southeastern at 20-0-2. The teams are statistically very similar, driven by strong defenses and a versatile offensive attack. Tori Doss leads Carmel with 17 goals, followed by Brooke Backes at 15 and Molly Pittman at 14. Hannah Miller leads Hamilton Southeastern with 22 goals while Emily Coudret has 17 and Jess Miller has 14.

No. 6 Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.) vs. Ramapo (Franklin Lakes, N.J.): These teams meet Saturday in the Bergen County Tournament final in the first of possibly three meetings between these powerhouse programs over the next few weeks. Northern Highlands won the first meeting, 6-2. The teams were supposed to play Thursday, but the league contest was postponed by rain. Therefore, after Saturday’s tournament final, Northern Highlands will meet in a regular-season make-up match on Nov. 5 and could play again in the playoffs.

Providence (Clarksville, Ind.) vs. Marian (Mishawaka, Ind.): While most of the attention in Indiana will be placed on the Class 2A state final, there will be another team chasing an undefeated record and a state title this weekend. Providence carries a 20-0-2 mark into its Class A final against Marian. Providence has shut out its last 11 opponents.

Montana State Final: State favorite Billings Senior might have received a major postseason break in the state quarterfinals Thursday. Billings Senior made it through to the semifinals, however the top two seeds on the other side of the playoff bracket lost.
