Week 4 of the football schedule brings one of the biggest matchups of the season, though it might not have been viewed that way at the start of the year. Everyone expected Warren Central to be great, as the talent-laden Warriors started out ranked No. 1 in the state. But Ben Davis has been the surprise team of the first half, surging to a 3-0 start on the strength of close wins over Cathedral and Pike and a blowout victory over North Central last week. The Giants have climbed from being a bubble team outside the Top 10 at the start of the season to their current spot at No. 3.
As part of our weekend preview, let's take a quick look at tonight's big game.
No. 1 Warren Central (3-0) at No. 3 Ben Davis (3-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Warren Central — Kevin Davis, WR, Sr. — Teams know Davis is going deep, and they still can't stop him. In three games, he's got 377 receiving yards and five TDs.
Ben Davis — Caleb Cornett, WR, Sr. — Cornett has emerged as the Giants' big-play threat, with three touchdown catches on the season.
A rematch in the regional playoffs is very possible, but the winner of this game will come away with a ton of confidence. The winner will also be viewed as the favorite in 5A, along with No. 2 Carmel.
Both teams feature a game-changing wide receiver, but both defenses are also smart enough (and talented enough) not to let that guy make the difference. What gives Warren Central the edge is senior RB Deionte Buckley, who has almost 500 rushing yards on the season. I think the Warriors can grind down the Ben Davis defense, and if Davis makes a big play, it could come late in the game after Buckley softens things up. WARREN CENTRAL 34, BEN DAVIS 17
