When the final regular season POWERADE state rankings were posted, Warren Central was the No. 1 team in the state, boasting wins over just about every challenger in Indiana. Carmel was one of the teams that lost to Warren Central in the regular season, but the rematch was a different story as Carmel beat Warren Central, 34-30, in the sectional finals, then ran the table and clinched the Class 5A state championship with a 54-0 win over Penn on Saturday.
With that win, Carmel also locked up the No. 1 spot in the final POWERADE state rankings. The Greyhounds finished the season 14-1.
Senior running back Jalen Duncan ran for 110 yards on 14 carries, while senior quarterback Brandon Denning passed for 143 yards and a touchdown as Carmel rolled to the state crown.
In Class 4A, Cathedral topped SB Washington, 42-7, to win its second straight state title. Cathedral won its final three games by a combined score of 139-14 and finishes the season ranked No. 5, highest of any team outside Class 5A.
