Sectional preview: Ben Davis vs. Zionsville

No. 4 Ben Davis has taken care of business this season. The Giants have beaten all the teams they were supposed to beat, and their only two losses came to teams ranked ahead of them (No. 1 Warren Central and No. 2 Carmel), and both games were winnable. So you might think that a 5-4 Zionsville team on a three-game losing streak doesn't stand much of a chance tonight, but let's take a closer look.

The Game:

No. 4 Ben Davis (7-2) at Zionsville (5-4)

Friday, 7 p.m.

The Players:

Ben Davis — The Giants have leaned on senior quarterback Matt Brock heavily this season, as his dual-threat ability keeps drives alive. If he rushes for more than two first downs, I think Zionsville is in trouble. And senior running back Lamont Osborn is a threat in his own right.

Zionsville — Quarterback Parker Dunshee has the talent to orchestrate an upset tonight, but he's run hot and cold over the second half of the season. Turnovers (red zone interceptions, in particular) have killed Zionsville during the current three-game losing streak. If Dunshee takes care of the ball, this game could stay close.

The Stakes:

Every player on the Ben Davis roster believes the team is capable of winning a state championship, and they would jump at the chance to get a rematch with Warren Central or Carmel. But they have to take care of business in this game first. Overlooking Zionsville would be a huge mistake.

The Prediction:

I think Brock makes the difference in this game. He's better than his counterpart at protecting the ball, and any kind of positive turnover ratio for Ben Davis would probably guarantee a win. I expect the Giants defense to produce at least one takeaway which gets converted into points. Ben Davis moves on.
