Walkersville (Walkersville, Md.) senior defender Joey Pfister has committed to play men's lacrosse for Jacksonville University.
Pfister is the No. 19 defender in the ESPNHS 100.
The senior earned several postseason honors last season, including Frederick News Post First Team and Monocacy Valley Athletic League (MVAL) Piedmont First Team.
ESPNHS: What other school’s did you consider?
Joey Pfister: "I considered Queens University of Charlotte, Manhattan, US Air Force Academy, Mercyhurst, Drexel, HighPoint."
ESPNHS: What made Jacksonville such an attractive choice?
JP: "Jacksonville was a great choice because of the location and the ability to pursue my major. I decided I wanted to play in a warmer climate, and be a part of a relatively new program."
ESPNHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?
JP: "A surprising thing about the recruiting process is how early schools are getting kids to commit. Some of these kids are making verbal commitments pretty early. I didn't know enough at that age to be able to commit to college."
ESPNHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?
JP: "The most important question I asked college coaches was how they coach and their views on the game. I wanted to be sure I like the style of play. I also wanted to make sure that I liked the coach."
ESPNHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?
JP: "A word of advice to upcoming players would be to get on the best club team you can get on and go on as many college visits as you can find time. Don't wait for official visits. You can start visiting colleges at any time. Overnight visits help you get a sense if like the guys on the team and location."
ESPNHS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that you think could change that would have made it easier or less stressful for you?
JP: "I feel like my recruiting process went by smoothly the only thing I did not like is when some coaches said they needed me to commit and make a decision in a week. It was too big of a decision to make my mind up like that. Jacksonville was very patient and helpful with all my questions and that's another reason why I chose Jacksonville."
