Youngest U-19 player chooses Notre Dame

Northport (Northport, N.Y.) junior attacker, Cortney Fortunato, has given a verbal commitment to play women’s lacrosse for Notre Dame. Fortunato is one of the top juniors in the nation and was the leading scorer on the US U-19 team that won the FIL U19 Women's World Championship this summer.

The attacker made the U-19 team as a sophomore and told ESPNHS that she made her commitment to the Fighting Irish on Monday evening.

ESPNHS: What other school’s did you consider?

Cortney Fortunato: “The other schools I considered were, Duke, UNC, Maryland, Northwestern, UVA, Georgetown, and Florida.”

ESPNHS: What made Notre Dame such an attractive choice?

CF: “Note Dame is absolutely beautiful, the campus and facilities are incredible, the athletic atmosphere is awesome, the coaching staff is highly motivated to win, and Notre Dame is an extremely prestigious school with great tradition and academics. You just feel something special when you walk onto the campus.”

ESPNHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?

CF: “What surprised me about the recruiting process was how hard it was to make a final decision, and how much I liked all the schools I visited.”

ESPNHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?

CF: “I think one of the most important questions I asked the college coaches was what daily life is like for their players, and how they run their programs, on and off the field.”

ESPNHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?

CF: “I think one important thing I would tell other players starting the recruiting process is to just take their time and follow your heart.”
