Cass Tech title dampened by racist letter to coach

Cass Tech completed an improbable run to the state title last weekend, beating Detroit Catholic Central, 49-13. But this week, the talk around Michigan isn't about the Technicians' incredible victory but rather a letter to the coach sent after the team's victory.

Tuesday evening, a photo of a letter circulated around Twitter, addressed to Cass Tech head football coach Thomas Wilcher. The author of the letter called Cass Tech football players "utter failures," took shots at the Public School by labeling it as a "holding tank" and made allusions to players one day being "in jail, addicted to drugs, or worse."

According to The Oakland Press, records indicate Cass Tech is one of the strongest academic schools among the Detroit Public Schools and had a 95.5 percent graduation rate last year.

Detroit Catholic Central President Richard Ranaletti addressed the letter in remarks to MLive.com. The letter was signed, but according to multiple sources, the school could not identify the alleged author of the letter in student or alumni databases.
