Minnesota Preps Pick'em: Week 3

Each week we'll take three intriguing matchups and put our knowledge to the test with some predictions. If you think your team's game is one of the best on the schedule, let us know in the comments or on Twitter @CParishESPNHS and we'll put it up for debate.

(Ranks are based on ESPNHS state rankings)

No. 3 Cretin-Derham Hall (2-0) vs. Stillwater (2-0)

This is CDH's first real test, and a strong showing against an up-and-coming Stillwater squad would be a clear signal that the team will be in state title contention. Stillwater needs a win over a big opponent to prove the first two early wins — over Woodbury and White Bear Lake — were signs that the Ponies are legit. I'm not completely sold on CDH as the state's best team, but I think they're better than Stillwater right now. PREDICTION: Cretin-Derham Hall 26, Stillwater 13

Champlin Park (1-1) vs. No. 5 Blaine (2-0)

As we mentioned earlier in our interview with Blaine QB Duke Anyanwu earlier, Blaine is taking teams by surprise this season. But it's doubtful the team will continue to sneak up on anyone after last week's impressive win over Hopkins. Anyanwu's squad has a tough battle this weekend against a Champlin Park team that played top team Eden Prairie very tough, then dispatched of Maple Grove, allowing only three points in the process. PREDICTION: Blaine 21, Champlin Park 14

No. 6 St. Thomas Academy (2-0) vs. Mahtomedi (2-0)

Both of these teams have lived on defense. Mahtomedi has allowed only seven points total in its first two games, while St. Thomas Academy has yet to give up a score thanks to victories of 45-0 and 42-0. Defense will set the tone early; offensively, senior Jordan Goodmanson has shown great passing flair for Mahtomedi while St. Thomas has John Gould to spread the ball around to a litany of playmakers. PREDICTION: Mahtomedi 24, St. Thomas Academy 17

Previous Record: 3-2
