Each week, we'll take an in-depth look at our preseason All-State basketball team and let you know how a few of those athletes are faring as the season progresses. We'll feature a Prime-Time player (PTP), an Other Top Player (OTP) and an under the radar star who is making a bid to be one of the state's top players (UTR).
If you've got athletes you think we should mention in our All-State Stock Watch, hit me up on Twitter @CParishESPNHS.
PTP: Rashad Vaughn, Robbinsdale Cooper, Senior
Cooper struggled out of the gate, at one point losing five in a row. But Vaughn has been a steady scoring presence all season. Now that the team appears to be back on track — Cooper has won its last two — Vaughn is as dangerous as ever. He's averaging 26.4 points per night and has cracked 30 points five times, including most recently in a win over Irondale on Sunday.
OTP: Will Dunn, Benilde-St. Margaret's, Senior
Benilde has worked its way into the third spot in our POWERADE Minnesota Weekly Rankings, and it's thanks in large part to the play of Dunn this season. He's stepped up as a reliable second and third option for the Red Knights, and while Sanjay Lumpkin takes care of most scoring duties, Dunn has been able to spell their star and come up big when he's needed most. In a game against Irondale on Friday, Dunn scored a season-high 21 points as his team won, 82-67.
UTR: Clay Elrod, Elk River, Sophomore
Not only is Elrod a stellar young player with tons of upside, he's also clutch — his put-back with 0.7 seconds remaining in his team's game against Maple Grove put Elk River ahead for good in a 68-66 win on Friday. Elrod finished the game with 26 points and 12 rebounds, and his production has helped Elk River jump out to a 10-5 record thus far.
