For several weeks now, the momentum and hype has been building up to this contest, No. 1 Rockhurst (6-0) vs. No. 8 Jefferson City (6-0).
There's plenty of starpower, plenty of good matchups and really, it could go either way. Still, Rockhurst enters as the favorite, what with it boasting an inexperienced unit on both sides of the ball and coming into its own of late. Tailback Jordan Walker is expected to be ready after missing the last couple games with a leg injury, and his production will be key in jumpstarting the Hawklets' offense.
Of course, Jefferson City has its own big-time rusher in Devon Moore. In seven games, the Jays senior has pounded his way to 771 yards and 12 touchdowns, making his squad the surprise of the season thus far. Rockhurst's defense will focus most of its attention on stopping Moore, which makes the play of Jays QB Thomas LePage key to the outcome.
Jefferson City's offense is high-powered and can score in a hurry, but it has yet to be truly tested until tonight. Likewise, the Rockhurst defense hasn't faced an offense like the Jays, who are putting up more than 42 points per game. In other words, major state title implications are on the line and this one should be all it's cracked up to be.
My pick: Rockhurst 28, Jefferson City 20
