Thanks to the continued weather issues, we have yet to see the state's top team in action, but there's been plenty to talk about on the Empire State football scene. As expected, Aquinas Institute has looked strong and, after beating St. Joe's Collegiate, will get another test this weekend against No. 3 St. Francis. Also, Xaverian made a move into the top 10 after downing a solid Monroe-Woodbury squad.
Here's how the first state rankings shake out (Last week's rankings in parentheses):
1. St. Anthony's (Melville) 0-0 (1)
Friars' season opener against State College (Pa.) was cancelled due to weather and travel issues, giving them an unexpected bye week before facing Monsignor Farrell this Friday.
2. Aquinas Institute (Rochester) 2-0 (2)
Little Irish have looked solid early on, beating St. Joe's Collegiate and Henninger handily. Next up: a solid St. Francis squad
3. St. Francis (Athol Springs) 2-0 (3)
Red Raiders are halfway to their 2010 win total with big victories against Liverpool and Holy Trinity, but their mettle will be tested in matchup this week against No. 2 Aquinas Institute.
