North Carolina soccer preview

The rare East Coast earthquake happened Tuesday, but as we've chronicled here and here, the rumblings throughout North Carolina high school sports have been happening since last Friday.

The local soccer scene was no exception, as Green Hope blanked defending state champ Jordan, 5-0, last week. Ryan Thompson tallied one goal and two assists while Drew Altman netted two scores to pace Green Hope. The win avenges last year's loss to Jordan, which went 25-0, but it does little to determine who is this year's favorite. Remember, two years ago, Jordan beat Green Hope 4-1, only to see Green Hope hand Jordan its lone loss a few months later in the playoff semifinals.

Such storylines should make the futbol season an exciting one. Two local teams enter the season ranked in the POWERADE FAB 50, with the Erick Suarez-led Myers Park checking in at No. 18.
