Top-ranked wrestler paralyzed in match

Alleghany senior wrestler Luke Hampton was paralyzed during a match in Lenoir last Saturday after sustaining neck injuries. School officials say Hampton broke his neck in two places after trying to take down an opponent and falling into a padded wall, according to a Winston-Salem Journal report.

Just a few days earlier, Hampton had earned the state's top ranking in Class 1A at 182 pounds. Fundraisers are currently being held to help Hampton's family pay for the proper medical attention.
