This week in Ohio high school football offers a bevy of intriguing contests between teams with legit title aspirations. The battle for Toledo’s top squad will pit St. John’s against Whitmer, while St. Xavier and Moeller will face off in a duel for Cincinnati private school pride.
Let’s get on with the picks.
St. John’s Toledo (4-0) at No. 10 Toledo Whitmer (4-0)
There’s a lot of star power on defense in this contest so don’t expect a shootout. I like Whitmer in this one. Chris Wormley has the defense clicking on all cylinders as the Panthers have posted three consecutive shutouts and allowed six points in their four wins.
David’s pick: Whitmer
No. 2 St. Xavier (3-1) at No. 4 Moeller (4-0)
The Bombers try to get back on track against a red-hot Moeller team which is undefeated and has outscored its opponents, 172-29. Monty Madaris broke out in a big way last week with 207 yards and 3 scores, but he yet to face a hard-hitting unit like St. Xavier. With that being said, I’m going with Moeller. St. X has struggled to score the last two weeks, while Moeller appears to be hitting its stride on offense.
David’s pick: Moeller
GlenOak (4-0) at Austintown-Fitch (3-1)
A great matchup at running back headlines this contest. GlenOak’s Bri’Onte Dunn has been one of the state’s most productive and physical runners this season, while Falcons senior William Mahone looks to prove he’s in the same class of his Ohio-State-bound counterpart. I went with AF last week and I’ll take them again on their home field.
David’s pick: Austintown-Fitch
Walsh Jesuit (2-1) at Lake Catholic (4-0)
Lake Catholic has already recorded huge victories over Cardinal Mooney and defending state champ Ursuline this year. The offense hasn’t been spectacular, but I like them to add another big win to their credit by taking down Walsh.
David’s pick: Lake Catholic
