The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of PrepVolleyball.com's Senior Aces rankings.
That being said, the state’s top recruits as ranked by PrepVolleyball.com are sure to enter the 2011-12 Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year conversation at some point. Here they are …
1. Irmo High (Columbia, SC) Outside Hitter Taylor Treacy
PrepVolleyball Senior Aces rank: 69
College: North Carolina (verbal)
John Tawa, publisher of PrepVolleyball.com: "Treacy is a very gifted athlete who is explosive off the floor and has a very quick arm. Her ability to play on a pin and attack at over 10 feet is special. Super quick lateral speed combined with a long and lean frame allow her to hit a high ball from either pin or run quick sets in the middle. A natural blocker with a good court vision, Treacy is extremely versatile and has the ability to pass and play defense as well."
2. Irmo High (Columbia, SC) Middle Blocer Desiree McCray
PrepVolleyball Senior Aces rank: 96
College: Georgia (verbal)
John Tawa, publisher of PrepVolleyball.com: "A physical middle blocker with tremendous athleticism, McCray’s size and quickness make her a menacing presence at the net as a blocker. As her offensive game develops to meet the shut down defense she currently possesses, look for McCray, who is an excellent student and team leader, to have a big impact for the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC."
