North Dakota Volleyball POY: Hadley Steffen

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Hadley Steffen


School: Red River (Grand Forks, N.D.)

Grade: Senior

Position: Outside hitter

Height: 5-foot-9


Athletic achievement: Steffen led the Roughriders to a 36-0 record and the Class A state title this past season. She recorded 438 kills, 282 digs, 57 blocks and 52 service aces while posting a kill percentage of .433. A two-time First Team All-State selection, Steffen had 26 digs and 19 kills in the five-set state title-clinching win over Bismarck Century (Bismarck, N.D.).

Academic excellence: Steffen has maintained a 3.53 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, Steffen has volunteered locally as a vacation bible school counselor and on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with her school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter.


“Hadley Steffen has been a huge part of the success of our program,” said Red River head coach Carolyn Olson. “She has been the ideal leader on and off the court.”


Steffen remains undecided upon a college destination.
