Louisiana Boys Track AOY: Kavahra Holmes

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2012 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Kavahra Holmes


School: Breaux Bridge (La.)

Grade: Senior

Height: 6-foot-2


Athletic achievement: Holmes won the Class 4A state championship in the 400-meter run this spring with a time of 46.18 seconds, which ranked as the nation’s No. 3 performance among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection. The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, he also anchored the 4x200-meter relay quartet to victory in 1:26.76, and the 4x400 meter relay squad to first place in 3:21.06, leading the Tigers to the state championship as a team.

Academic excellence: Holmes has maintained a 3.09 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community, he has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives with the Beta Club and the Boy Scouts of America.


“What Kavahra has done for our school is bring track back to life,” said Breaux Bridge coach Brent Angelle. “He’s changed the entire environment here; kids are coming out of the woodwork to run track now. He’s been so much fun to watch as a coach. I may never see another kid run a 46-second 400.”

THE FUTURE: Holmes has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at Louisiana State University this fall.
