Louisiana Softball POY: Baylee Corbello

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Baylee Corbello


School: Sam Houston (Lake Charles, La.)

Grade: Junior

Position: Pitcher

Height: 5-foot-5


Athletic achievement: Corbello led the Broncos (23-4) to the Class 5A state championship this past season, a year after leading Sam Houston to the Class 4A state title. She posted a 23-4 record with a 0.86 ERA and 327 strikeouts in 179 innings pitched. Corbello recorded 16 shutouts, including three no-hitters. At the plate, she batted .484 with five home runs, 17 doubles, 36 RBI and a .905 slugging percentage. Corbello hit a home run and struck out 14 batters in the Broncos nine-inning, 2-1 win over Hahnville (Boutte, La.) in the state title game.

Academic excellence: Corbello has maintained a 3.59 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, she has volunteered locally as a youth softball coach and on behalf of Buddy Ball, a program that organizes T-ball games for physically and intellectually challenged children. She has also donated her time at an at area women’s shelter.


“Baylee Corbello pitched 18 innings straight to win the state title, including pitching against the best hitting lineup in the state,” said Amy Pitre, head coach of rival East Ascension (Gonzales, La.). “And she hit a solo homer in the state final to help herself win it. She was amazing.”

THE FUTURE: Corbello will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
