A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2012 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Nick Ryan
School: Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius, N.Y.)
Athletic achievement: Ryan won the 1,600-meter run with a meet-record time of 4:05.24 and captured the 3,200-meter run in 9:03.81 at the New York state championship meet this spring. His winning trip in the 1,600 is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 time among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection. He is also the state’s reigning Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Academic excellence: Ryan has maintained a B-plus average in the classroom.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of a homeless shelter and a youth arts program.
“Nick knows that to get from point A to point B, you have to put in the work,” said Fayetteville-Manlius coach Bill Aris. “He’s got a great attitude and a great work ethic and he brought out his best for spring track this year.”
THE FUTURE: Ryan will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
