A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Brittney Martin
School: Syracuse (Utah)
Athletic achievement: Martin led the Titans to a perfect 22-0 record and the Class 5A state championship this past season. She averaged 19.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 4.7 steals per game. The Deseret News Miss Basketball as a junior, she is rated the nation’s No.19 recruit in the Class of 2012 by the HoopGurlz ESPNU 100 and was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Academic excellence: Martin has maintained a B average in the classroom.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of youth basketball programs and has served as a tutor for elementary school students.
“Brittney Martin is as good a player as I’ve seen in Utah in 20 years,” said Van Price, head coach at Layton (Utah). “She scores against double teams. She rebounds like a post and handles the ball like a point guard. She can hurt teams in so many different ways.”
THE FUTURE: Martin has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on an athletic scholarship at Oklahoma State University this fall.
