Eye on POY: Idaho boys soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Tyson Fox

Sophomore midfielder/forward, Rocky Mountain (Meridian, Idaho)

2011 Team record: 2-12-2 (Class 5A)

2011 Team standing: Did not qualify for postseason

2011 Goals: 6

2011 Assists: 10

2011 Points per game: 1.00

Career goals: 10

Career assists: 22

Academics: A average

Collegiate destination: Undecided

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Had a direct hand in 16 of Rocky Mountain's 18 goals this season (88.9 percent). Region IV ODP Team member. Two-time First Team Class 5A All-Southern Idaho Conference selection.

Bryson Pavel

Senior defender, Boise (Idaho)

2011 Team record: 19-1 (Class 5A)

2011 Team standing: Class 5A state champions

2011 Goals: 10

2011 Assists: 6

2011 Points per game: 0.80

Academics: A-minus average

Collegiate destination: Seattle Pacific University

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Anchored a defense that allowed 13 goals in 20 games with 13 shutouts. Recorded two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win over Post Falls (Idaho) in the Class 5A state semifinals. Backboned a defense that shut out Borah (Boise, Idaho), 1-0, in the state title match. 2011 Class 5A First Team All-State selection. 2011 First Team Class 5A All-Southern Idaho Conference selection.
