Texas rankings remain steady as big Week 2 looms

Allen and Lake Travis (Austin), the top-ranked Class 5A and 4A team, respectively, in ESPNHS Texas High School Rankings, face a ranked opponent Friday in a difficult road setting.

No. 1 Allen (2-0) travels deep into East Texas to No. 11 Longview (2-2) where the Lobos’ record is 33-1 since 2004. Longview will be out to avenge a 24-20 loss at Allen last season.

No. 6 Lake Travis (2-0) heads north to play No. 14 Aledo (1-1) where the Bearcats haven’t lost since 2007. Aledo in 2010 ended the Lake Travis’ 48-game winning streak, 14-10. Lake Travis went on to win its fourth consecutive state title (Class 4A Division I) and Aledo won its second straight Class 4A Division II state championship.

Without further ado, here's this week's top 25 (Last week's ranking in parentheses):

1. Allen 2-0 (1)

Senior quarterback Alec Morris threw for 326 yards and five touchdowns and Andrew Rodriguez made seven catches for 199 yards and two scores in a 59-0 rout of 1-1 Justin Northwest (Fort Worth). The Eagles complete non-district play Friday on the road against 2-0 Longview.

2. Katy 2-0 (2)

The Tigers’ defense permitted 0-2 Alief Taylor (Houston) only seven first downs 87 total yards and forced 10 punts in a 31-0 road shutout. Katy entertains 2-0 West Brook (Beaumont) on Saturday.

3. Euless Trinity 2-0 (3)

Senior Joel Kimpela rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-17 victory over 1-1 Abilene. The Trojans kick off District 6-5A play at home against 1-1 Richland (North Richland Hills).

4. Pearland 2-0 (4)

Jacob Garner completed 10 of 11 passes for 234 yards and John Gibberman punched in three touchdowns in the Oilers’ 27-7 win over 0-2 Fort Bend Kempner (Sugar Land). The defending Class 5A Division I state champions face 1-1 Memorial (Houston) Friday on the road.

5. Coppell 2-0 (5)

Jake Larson threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys stormed from behind, outscoring 1-1 Arlington 24-0 in the second half of a 38-24 victory. Next up is a road trip to 2-0 Jesuit (Dallas).

6. Lake Travis (Austin) 2-0 (6)

Four starters were out with injuries, but junior quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 256 yards and accounted for six touchdowns as the Cavs clobbered Hendrickson (Pflugerville), 43-14. Next for Lake Travis is a showdown on the road against 1-1 Aledo.

7. Denton Ryan 2-0 (7)

Kevin Carpenter completed five passes and four went for touchdowns as the Raiders opened a 42-3 halftime lead over 0-2 Newman Smith (Carrollton) and eventually settled for a 48-24 victory. Next is a home game against 0-2 North Garland (Garland).

8. DeSoto 2-0 (8)

Raheem Wilson threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns in a 63-0 domination of Douglass (Oklahoma City, Okla.) in the Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic. Up next is neighboring rival Cedar Hill (1-1).

9. Steele (Cibolo) 2-0 (9)

Erik Huhn and John Burton returned interceptions for touchdowns and the Steele defense allowed only seven first downs and 91 total yards in a 30-0 road triumph over 0-2 Round Rock. The Knights host 2-0 Tivy (Kerrville) on Friday.

10. Arlington Martin 2-0 (10)

Junior running back Kyle Hicks rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns as the Warriors breezed to a 43-10 victory over 0-2 South Garland (Garland). Next is a road game at 1-1 Flower Mound.

11. Longview 2-0 (11)

Tory White came off the bench to rush for 172 yards on 20 carries in the Lobos’ 38-22 road win at 0-2 John Tyler (Tyler). The victory sets up a home field showdown with No. 1 Allen (2-0).

12. Stephenville 1-0 (14)

Aiavion Edwards rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 45-13 wrecking of 1-1 Wylie (Abilene). Up next is a home game against 2-0 Brownwood.

13. Aledo 1-1 (15)

A week after Stephenville snapped their 29-game winning streak, the Bearcats rolled behind Johnathan Gray’s 336-yard, five-touchdown performance, coming on only 15 carries. Aledo hosts 2-0 Lake Travis in a Class 4A showdown on Friday.

14. Southlake Carroll 2-0 (16)

Junior quarterback Kenny Hill threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 109 in a 45-13 blowout of 1-1 L.D. Bell (Hurst). The Dragons hit the road for the first time on Friday at 2-0 Berkner (Richardson).

15. Klein Collins (Spring) 2-0 (17)

Shane Rhodes rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-21 triumph over 0-1 Cypress Lakes (Houston). Next is a road game against 1-1 Fort Bend Willowridge (Houston).

16. Woods (Cypress) 1-0 (18)

Gabriel West rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ season-opening 27-21 victory over 0-2 A&M Consolidated (College Station). Up next is a Saturday date against 1-0 Cypress Falls (Houston).

17. Lufkin 2-0 (19)

Jamarcus Walker rushed for 137 yards and four touchdowns in the Panthers’ 38-20 victory over 0-2 Tyler Lee (Tyler). Up next is a home game against 0-1 Nacogdoches.

18. Skyline (Dallas) 2-0 (20)

David Greene rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-20 victory over 0-2 Cocoa (Fla.) Monday at the Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic. The Raiders complete non-district play against 2-0 Bowie (Arlington) on Saturday.

19. Smithson Valley (Spring Branch) 1-0 (21)

Quarterback Parker McKenzie utilized eight receivers for his 14 completions, totaling 241 yards and two touchdowns in the Rangers’ 42-13 laugher over 0-1 Laredo United (Laredo). Next is a road game against 1-1 MacArthur (San Antonio).

20. Bowie (Arlington) 2-0 (23)

Russell Hansbrough rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-6 rout of 0-2 Edna Karr (New Orleans, La.) at the Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic. The Volunteers meet 2-0 Skyline (Dallas) on Saturday.

21. Highland Park (University Park) 2-0 (24)

Preston Miller rushed for 138 yards and four touchdowns in the Scots 46-7 thrashing of Monterrey Tec (Monterrey, Mexico). The Scots will entertain 2-0 Sherman on Friday.

22. Cedar Hill 1-1 (Unranked)

The Longhorns rebounded from last week’s loss to No. 1 Allen with a 24-21 win over Guyer (Denton) as Laquvionte Gonzalez had 119 receiving and 49 rushing yards. On Saturday, the Horns face rival DeSoto (2-0.)

23. Judson (Converse) 2-0 (25)

Quaylon Jones rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 5:20 to go, in a 21-14 triumph against 0-2 Leander. Next is a road date against 0-2 Roosevelt (San Antonio).

24. Guyer (Denton) 1-1 (12)

Quarterback Jerrod Heard threw for three touchdowns, but the Wildcats couldn’t overcome four turnovers in a 24-21 loss to 1-1 Cedar Hill in the nightcap of the Herbstreit Classic. The Wildcats next game is Sept. 16 against Horn (Mesquite) on the road.

25. Westwood (Round Rock) 2-0 (Unranked)

Quarterback Ben Johnson rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns in the Warriors’ 31-10 besting of Bowie (Austin). Next up is the first road trip against 0-2 Austin High (Austin).
