Good Counsel captures WCAC crown, South County scores big win in football playoffs

Let's zip around Greater D.C. for updates on the football playoffs.

Good Counsel made quick work of Gonzaga in the WCAC championship game, completing the squad's first unbeaten campaign and cementing the Falcons' status as a top 10 team nationally. Senior Stefon Diggs got things off to a fast start with a 70-yard burst on the first play of the game en route to a 42-0 rout. Senior RB Wes Brown racked up 157 yards and three scores and his backup Dorian O'Daniel proved he'll be able to shoulder the load on offense next year, finishing with 99 yards and a pair of scores.

Chris McPherson booted a 24-yard FG with less than 10 seconds to play to vault Quince Orchard to a 23-21 win over Churchill. Senior RB Mark Green amassed 168 yards and reached pay dirt twice to help QO overcome three lost fumbles. The win moved the Cougars to 12-0 overall and sets up a date with C.H. Flowers, which bested Suitland, 14-7. Senior QB Jonathan Holland hooked up with junior Keith Payne for a 23-yard score on 4th-and-9 for the decisive score. The win clinched the first regional trophy for the Jags. Workhorse back Rob Chesson toted the rock 35 times for 248 yards and three scores to power Old Mill to the 4A East title, 28-7, over North Point.

South County forced four turnovers highlighted by a Andrew Rector pick-6, as the Stallions upset Stone Bridge 25-3 Friday night. Brooke Point booked its ticket to the Northwest Region Division 5 title game with a 47-27 defeat of Broad Run. Zach Deutel passed four TDs as BP's offense took off. His counterpart Conor Jessop was injured in the first half and didn't return... Manny Smith's three rushing scores were too much for Lake Braddock to overcome as Centreville grabbed a 21-18 victory to set up a Saturday rematch with Westfield -- the only team to beat Centreville this fall.

Gar-Field was forced to vacate three wins for using an ineligible player, which knocked the Indians out of the playoffs and gave second life to Osbourn, the team Gar-Field beat last weekend. With the forfeit, Osbourn will face Hylton in the Virginia AAA Region semis at 7:30 tonight.
