Colts still need to replace Bethea

INDIANAPOLIS -- The sense of uneasiness has seemed to come back with some Indianapolis Colts fans. Safety Antoine Bethea, the backbone of the team’s secondary, signed with the San Francisco 49ers shortly after free agency started on March 11.

The Colts have yet to go outside to fill Bethea’s spot in the secondary.

As far as safeties go, Ryan Clark, Thomas DeCoud, Chris Clemons, Yeremiah Bell are still some of the players still on the free-agent market.

Internally, the Colts have Sergio Brown, Delano Howell, Corey Lynch and David Sims currently on the roster to go with starter LaRon Landry.

Howell was solid last season, starting three games at free safety, and had a career high in tackles (24) and passes defended (4).

Howell is likely the front-runner if -- and that’s a big if at this point -- the Colts don’t acquire a safety through free agency, trade or the draft.
