Wayne on Hakeem Nicks: 'I'm a fan of his'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne talked about several subjects during a phone interview Tuesday.

His charity event for American Cancer Society childhood cancer research. His rehab from a torn ACL suffered last season. Wayne also talked about the signing of fellow receiver Hakeem Nicks.

Nicks signed a one-year deal with the Colts on March 14 to team with Wayne and T.Y. Hilton at receiver after spending the first five years of his career with the New York Giants.

“I think he’s going to add something that we really can use, probably what we needed the last couple of years,” Wayne said. “His presence will help us out. I’m a fan of his. I don’t think there’s one guy who can stick him one-on-one.”

Nicks had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2010 and 2011, but the 26-year-old didn’t catch a touchdown pass for the first time in his five-year career last season. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said during the NFL owners meetings last month that “perhaps this is what he needed, the change he needed.”

“One thing I like about this, which [Nicks] probably doesn’t like, but it’s a one-year deal,” Wayne said. “One-year deals are a prove-it year. He’s going to have a little chip on his shoulder, and I think if we all go in with the same attitude he comes into it with, I think we’re going to be alright.”
