Every Thursday I’ll present an interesting (to me, anyway) stat, break it down, and try to provide some context heading into the game the following weekend.
You wouldn’t expect this to be a season in which the Jaguars set any positive records, especially after the 0-8 start. But this team does have a chance to accomplish something that has been done only one other time in franchise history: have a 1,000-yard rusher, 1,000-yard receiver, and 3,000-yard passer in the same season.
It’s going to be tough, especially with running back Maurice Jones-Drew’s status for Sunday’s game against Buffalo uncertain because of a strained right hamstring, but it is attainable if two players produce at a higher rate over the final three games than they have during the first 13.
Jones-Drew has 719 yards rushing and is averaging 55.3 yards per game. He needs 281 more yards to reach 1,000, which means he would have to average 93.7 yards per game in the final three games. That’s a reasonable number, but Jones-Drew may not even play against the Bills. We’ll find out his status on Friday.
Receiver Cecil Shorts has caught 66 passes for 777 yards and would need to average 74.3 receiving yards per game in the final three. He’s currently averaging 60 yards per game.
Quarterback Chad Henne needs just 564 yards passing to reach 3,000, and is the most likely of the three players to hit the needed milestone. Henne has played in 12 games and is averaging 203 yards passing per game. However he is averaging 231.1 yards in his 10 starts. He needs to average 188 yards per game in the final three weeks.
The Jaguars play Buffalo, Tennessee and Indianapolis the last three weeks. Those teams rank 28th, 18th and 23rd, respectively, in the NFL against the pass. They rank fifth, 22nd and 15th against the rush.
The only other time the Jaguars have had a 1,000-yard rusher, 1,000-yard receiver, and 3,000-yard passer was 2000, when Fred Taylor ran for 1,399 yards, Keenan McCardell had 1,213 yards receiving, Jimmy Smith had 1,207 yards receiving, and Mark Brunell threw for 3,640 yards.
