KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Here is this week's edition of the Kansas City Chiefs mailbag. To ask a question for a future edition, send it to me via Twitter (@adamteicher) with tag #ChiefsMail.
@adamteicher: There is no news because the season is over and Alex Smith and the rest of the players have scattered. My understanding was that he was on track for a full recovery. He should be ready to go when the Chiefs gather again for the start of their offseason program in April.
@adamteicher: The Chiefs didn't draft Aaron Murray last year thinking he would necessarily become an eventual starter at quarterback. If they thought that, they would have drafted him earlier than the fifth round. But he's a talented player and the Chiefs thought he was worth a fifth-round pick to see if they could develop him. That's basically where the process is right now. He might be the No. 2 quarterback as soon as next season.
@adamteicher: He would make sense, but I would think the Chiefs would be out if the bidding becomes too steep for Bryan Bulaga, because they are not going to be in great shape with regard to the salary cap. They have Donald Stephenson, and could re-sign Ryan Harris for a relatively inexpensive contract, so the Chiefs have less-expensive options.
@adamteicher: Not much would surprise me as far as the position of the player the Chiefs will draft in the first round. They will stay true to their board. It's what they've done in the first round since John Dorsey arrived as their general manager two years ago. What would surprise me is if the Chiefs reached to pick a wide receiver or an offensive lineman just to fill a need. Just because it looks like another deep class of wide receivers doesn't mean the Chiefs should pass on one in the first round if there is a guy available who they like.
@adamteicher any news on the chiefs and erin Henderson? Feel like he could be a solid pickup.— Ben Pogue (@bpogue23) January 25, 2015
@adamteicher: You're referring to signing former Baltimore nose tackle Terrence Cody as a backup for Dontari Poe. I like your idea, but think you can do better than Cody, who never amounted to much during his seasons with the Ravens.
