Rapid Reaction: Kansas City Chiefs

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Some thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs' 56-31 victory against the Oakland Raiders:

What it means: The Chiefs clinched at least a wild-card playoff berth with the victory. At 11-3, the Chiefs are tied with the Denver Broncos for first place in the AFC West. The Broncos would hold the tiebreaker at the end of the season by virtue of their season sweep of the Chiefs, so the Chiefs need to pick up a game in the standings over the season's final two weeks to overtake the Broncos and win the division title.

Stock watch: Running back Jamaal Charles had his second straight big game. Charles had 195 yards receiving and rushed for 20 more while scoring five touchdowns. He is the first of the franchise's players to score five touchdowns in a game since Abner Haynes did it for the Dallas Texans in 1961. Quarterback Alex Smith had a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He was 17-of-20 for 287 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes. He lost a fumble, his first of the season, but that doesn't count against his passing statistics.

Safety Eric Berry intercepted two passes and returned one 47 yards for a touchdown. Rookie running back Knile Davis scored a touchdown for the third straight game. Free safety Kendrick Lewis missed a tackle attempt on a long Oakland pass play that set up a touchdown. He also was penalized for removing his helmet on the field after a play. That happened after the Chiefs stopped the Raiders and it allowed Oakland to continue its possession. The Chiefs allowed more than 425 yards for the fifth time in six games. The Chiefs led at one point 35-10 only to see the Raiders slice the deficit to 35-31 before Kansas City pulled away again.

Sweeping the Raiders: The Chiefs won both of their games against Oakland for the first time since 2006. The Chiefs in October broke a six-game losing streak against the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium with a 24-7 victory. Kansas City is still only 2-3 in games this season against opponents from the AFC West. One divisional game remains, on Dec. 29 against the Chargers in San Diego.

What’s next: The Chiefs play against the 9-5 Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The Colts have already clinched the AFC South championship. The teams are on track to meet in a wild-card round playoff game. That game would be played in Indianapolis.
