Week 17 really was a bye for many Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The snap count sheet for the Kansas City Chiefs' final regular-season game in San Diego confirms that, indeed, for the visitors, it was more like a bye than a competition.

Eight defensive starters didn't play: Linemen Tyson Jackson, Dontari Poe and Mike DeVito, linebackers Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, and defensive backs Brandon Flowers and Eric Berry.

Linebacker Akeem Jordan was in for 25 of San Diego's 73 plays. Free safety Kendrick Lewis was in for 53 plays, and cornerback Sean Smith 10.

Safeties Husain Abdullah and Quintin Demps, cornerback Marcus Cooper, linebackers Frank Zombo and Josh Martin, and end Allen Bailey played every defensive snap and many on special teams. Others who played a high percentage on defense: cornerback Ron Parker (64 snaps), nickel back Dunta Robinson (58), and linebacker James-Michael Johnson (48).

On offense, quarterback Alex Smith, running back Jamaal Charles, offensive lineman Branden Albert, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, and tight end Anthony Fasano didn't play. Center Rodney Hudson and guard Jeff Allen played only on special teams.

Among the regular wide receivers, Dexter McCluster was in for 36 of the 72 snaps, Donnie Avery for seven. Offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was in on 51 plays, Eric Fisher 22. Fullback Anthony Sherman played 22 snaps.

Linemen Donald Stephenson, Rokevious Watkins, Rishaw Johnson and Eric Kush played every snap. Quarterback Chase Daniel and wide receiver Junior Hemingway each missed one.
