Some potential holes KC might look to fill

By the time this group of players is eligible for free agency in 2015, many of them might have re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. But in case they don’t, the Chiefs might prepare in this year’s draft to replace at least some of them.

The list of players headed into the final seasons of their contracts is headed by quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston. The Chiefs would like to re-sign both. Look for that to happen with Smith before he becomes a free agent. The Chiefs would likely make Houston, a strong pass-rusher, their franchise player before letting him hit the open market.

Other useful players who could become free agents next year: center Rodney Hudson and defensive lineman Allen Bailey. Whether or not the Chiefs draft players at those positions this year could signal their intentions to re-sign those players before they get a chance to depart.

The remainder of the Chiefs’ potential 2015 unrestricted free agents: fullback Anthony Sherman, long snapper Thomas Gafford, running back Joe McKnight, offensive lineman Jeff Linkenbach and defensive backs Chris Owens and Ron Parker.

Tight end Richard Gordon, linebacker Dezman Moses, and defensive backs DeMarcus Van Dyke and Kevin Rutland would be restricted free agents.
