Mailbag: What can Chiefs do at cornerback?

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – This is another training camp edition of the Kansas City Chiefs mailbag. To ask a question for a future edition, send it to me via Twitter (@adamteicher) and use the hashtag #ChiefsMail.

@adamteicher: Other than promoting Sean Smith into the starting lineup over Ron Parker, which I would expect to happen sometime soon, they don't have many great options. There aren't many capable corners available out there. That could change as other teams make their cuts. I would think the Chiefs would look hard at any corners who come available. But Smith is their best in-house option.

@adamteicher: Things might have looked better against Cincinnati if Smith and Eric Berry had been in the starting lineup. But it's a problem for them and even 40 points a game might not be enough sometimes. It wasn't against Indianapolis in the playoffs last year.

@adamteicher: Malcolm Bronson played well. If he keeps playing like he did against the Bengals, he'll get that job. The Chiefs are thin at safety and need one of their young safeties to step forward. He might be the one.

@adamteicher: I'm not sure the Chiefs will have to choose between Berry and Justin Houston. But assuming they do, you make a good point. They have the eventual replacement for Houston, though it might be better if Dee Ford was the eventual replacement for Tamba Hali instead. They have no one capable of stepping in for Berry.

@adamteicher: I don't see Travis Kelce replacing Anthony Fasano in the starting lineup any time soon but he will play a lot with the first team. To have a 260-pound tight end who is as fast as Kelce is a big advantage to the Chiefs. They weren't more aggressive in pursuing a wide receiver this year because they thought they would get a lot more help in the passing game from their tight ends. Kelce is a big part of that.

@adamteicher:It wouldn't surprise me to see Kelce catch more passes than Fasano if they both stay healthy.

@adamteicher: Not daily but he's been fun to watch. Fast guys usually are.
