Perhaps the move became inevitable when tight end Tony Moeaki fractured his shoulder in the preseason, though there was no indication it had to be a season-ending injury. Perhaps the Chiefs can acquire another player who can give them what Moeaki would have this season.
But the Chiefs, for the time being at least, are weaker with the news they have parted ways with Moeaki. Moeaki broke the news on his Twitter account.
The Chiefs may have been without Moeaki for a sizable portion of the season anyway. Regardless, this is a blow for Andy Reid’s efforts to build a better passing game. The Chiefs will need to acquire a veteran who can help them as a receiver or get more from rookie tight end Travis Kelce, a third-round draft pick.
