Scouting the Bruins: Despite a slow start, UCLA handily defeated the Indiana State Sycamores, 86-59 in their season opener. Freshman Kyle Anderson and junior David Wear each had double-doubles and freshman Jordan Adams had 21 points and seven rebounds. The Bruins held the Sycamores to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting.

Scouting the Anteaters: Senior guard Daman Starring had a career-high 25 points and was named Big West Player of the Week after Irvine started the season with a 78-64 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack. It was the first season-opening win in five seasons for the Anteaters, who have all five starters returning from last year's team. They outrebounded Nevada, 51-37.

The series: UCLA holds a 7-2 edge in games against UC Irvine. The teams are meeting for the third consecutive season, with UCLA winning last year, 89-60, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. UC Irvine's two victories in the series came in 1986 (first round of the NIT) and 1988.
