Some extras to pass along from Thursday's Pac-10 football media frenzy at the Rose Bowl:
-- UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is under the impression that offensive lineman Darius Savage (back) and receiver Josh Smith (knee) will be ready for the start of fall camp, which begins Aug. 9.
-- Incoming freshman Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Portland, Ore./Douglas) was recently given a cortisone shot to deal with a groin issue, but he is expected to be ready for the start of camp. Odighizuwa, ESPN.com's No. 2-rated defensive end in the 2010 class, figures to compete for a spot on UCLA's line. Fellow incoming freshman Anthony Jefferson (Los Angeles, Calif./Cathedral) had his hip examined, but Neuheisel said he was told Jefferson will be good to go.
-- Sophomore defensive back Brandon Sermons (broken leg) is still recovering and will miss the season. Incoming freshmen Derrick Bryant (Columbus, Ohio/Brookhaven) and John Young (Redondo Beach, Calif./Loyola) both had shoulder surgery and will also miss the season.
-- Incoming freshman Anthony Barr (San Pedro, Calif./Loyola) is an offensive player -- for now, at least. "In the beginning, for sure," Neuheisel said. It had been rumored that the 6-foot-5 Barr would start off as a linebacker or safety.
