As it stands now, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Matt Kalil is slated to guard quarterback Matt Barkley's blind side this upcoming season as the left tackle. Now, Kalil has made just one start as a Trojan, filling in for the academically ineligible Tyron Smith during last year's Emerald Bowl.
But the 6-foot-6, 295-pounder has a lot of potential, and coaches have been impressed with what they've seen so far from Kalil through nine spring practices. Saturday, the brother of former USC All-American Ryan Kalil talked about how the Trojan offensive line has meshed as a unit during spring practice — and how there's more work to do. He also offered big praise for the Trojans' defensive line:
