Going head-to-head with Oregon, a Signing Day preview

It may seem like it, but it's not all about De'Anthony Thomas.

There's a lot on the line Wednesday for USC, and an interesting battle is emerging between the Trojans and the Oregon Ducks, their primary competitors for Thomas' services.

USC and UO will be going head-to-head for four key recruits Wednesday on signing day: defensive tackles Christian Heyward (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Delvon Simmons (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) athlete Marqise Lee (Gardena, Calif./Serra) and Thomas (Los Angeles, Calif./Crenshaw).

Heyward could also pick San Diego State, Lee has California in his top three and Simmons has Rutgers in the mix, but there is a good chance all four players could end up either a Trojan or Duck. In that case, the decisions of the four would go a long way toward determining the relative success of each school's class. Why, you ask?

Well, USC and Oregon's recruiting classes are going to be compared to each other for the foreseeable future, as both schools have established themselves as signing day powerhouses. This is just the first year, it appears.

That's just one of the many things to pay attention to during national signing day, which officially begins at 6 a.m. PST, when the clock strikes 9 on the East Coast and recruits can begin sending in their signed letter of intent. We went over their specific chances on committing to USC in a previous post, but here's the schedule we've assembled from published reports on when to expect the announcements from all the uncommitted/undecided prospects USC is recruiting:

6 a.m -- Cornerback Marcus Roberson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas)

6 a.m. -- Linebacker Lamar Dawson (Danville, Ken./Boyle County)

6:05 a.m. -- Safety Erique Florence (Valley, Ala./Valley), ESPNU

7 a.m. -- Offensive guard Aundrey Walker

7 a.m. -- Linebacker Kent Turene (Lauderlake Lakes, Fla./Boyd Anderson)

8 a.m. -- Simmons

8 a.m. -- Running back Javorius 'Buck' Allen (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln)

8:30 a.m. -- Heyward

Noon -- Tight end/defensive end Troy Niklas (Anaheim, Calif./Servite), FSW

Noon -- Lee, FSW

Noon -- Offensive tackle Torian White (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood), FSW

5:30 p.m. -- Tight end Junior Pomee (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde)

5:30 p.m. -- Cornerback Ryan Henderson (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde)

6 p.m. -- Thomas

The Trojans also have 15 other commitments who are considered solid. Those include receiver George Farmer (Gardena, Calif./Serra), linebacker Anthony Sarao (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) and defensive end Greg Towsend Jr. (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills).

USC will announce those commitments' signed letter of intents as they come in during the day Wednesday, and we'll have them here on the blog -- plus interviews with select signees throughout the day.
