Hurt Galippo could be back Sunday

Senior middle linebacker Chris Galippo suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder on a fall in Tuesday's practice, he said Wednesday, but he could be back on the field by this weekend, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin said.

The injury is a re-aggravation of the shoulder bruise he first suffered last week, which caused him to miss roughly a week's worth of practices. He had been returning Tuesday on a limited basis before he suffered the injury midway through the practice, which sidelined him for the rest of the session.

"He's done that twice now," Kiffin said Wednesday. "Twice he's fallen -- yesterday morning in the walk-through and then yesterday afternoon he got hit on that same shoulder."

Galippo said the main issue with the injury involved lifting his hand above his head, which he can't do at the moment. But he said he had no long-term concerns about it, despite the re-aggravation nature of it. Kiffin also said he expected Galippo back sooner rather than later when he was asked if there was any chance he'd miss the season opener Sept. 3 against Minnesota.

"I don't think so," Kiffin said. "I would anticipate him playing in preseason game No. 3."

Preseason game No. 3 -- or the Trojans' third scrimmage of the fall -- is scheduled for Sunday at the Coliseum. It's the first of two remaining Coliseum practices for USC this fall.

During Wednesday's morning's lighter practice, freshman Lamar Dawson continued to take the majority of the first-team snaps in Galippo's absence.
