Players often hold grudges against front-office people who trade them or otherwise send them packing.
That's not the case with Angels pitcher Dan Haren, who was traded by Jerry Dipoto in July of 2010. Dipoto was the interim GM in Arizona when he sent Haren (and a good chunk of salary relief) to the Angels in exchange for Joe Saunders and three young pitchers.
Now, Haren and Dipoto will be reunited in Anaheim. The Angels are holding a noon press conference Saturday to introduce Dipoto as their new GM.
I reached out to Haren via e-mail and here is his response:
"Jerry was great. I really only knew him for a few months, but I interacted quite a bit with him leading up to me being traded to the Angels. He was easy to talk to and very up front. I know he was highly respected and thought-of in the Diamondbacks organization.
"It's a good signing for our club and a good start to the off-season."
One of the recurring phrases you hear about Dipoto when you talk to people around baseball: He's easy to talk to. Dipoto is well-liked and has deep connections throughout the game.
