Ervin Santana's window could be closing

LOS ANGELES -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia continues to insist that Ervin Santana's spot in the rotation is secure, but that could soon change if the veteran right-hander doesn't get a grip on the poor command that has been plaguing him.

Santana, who is 3-7 with a 5.74 ERA, said he has been told he will pitch Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. With Jered Weaver set to re-join the rotation next week, beyond that is up in the air. Santana could be headed to the bullpen, with rookie Garrett Richards pitching in his stead.

Scioscia said Tuesday that Richards will get at least one more start. Santana has had particularly rough results lately, having allowed six home runs and 15 walks with a 10.18 ERA in his last four starts.

"I trust my stuff. I trust myself. I believe I can do better than that," Santana said.

The issue, Santana said is the location of his pitches and "not anything mental or anything like that."

"It's not like I'm all over the place," Santana said. "It's, like, just a little bit. It's going to be good."

Weaver threw another bullpen session Tuesday, will pitch a simulated game Friday and could be set to return either early next week against the San Francisco Giants or the following weekend against the Dodgers.
